Essentials for your baby's high chair: comfort, safety, and peace of mind
A high chair is one of the first essential items you’ll need for everyday life with a baby. In fact, I recently wrote an article to help you choose a vintage high chair (→ Top 5 vintage high chairs compatible with our Timouny cushions)
To ensure mealtimes go smoothly for both baby and parents, a few well-chosen accessories can make all the difference. Here is our selection of must-haves for your baby’s high chair, designed to combine comfort, convenience, and peace of mind.
The high chair cushion: the #1 must-have
Highchair cushions are often underestimated, yet they play a vital role. Why they’re essential:
- It makes your baby more comfortable
- It helps with maintenance, especially on wooden chairs
- It prevents direct contact with a cold seat
- It protects the chair and makes it easier to clean
- A well-fitting cushion helps keep your baby comfortable, even during longer meals.
The harness or safety straps
Safety remains a top priority, especially once your baby starts moving around. It keeps your baby in a seated position and prevents slipping. It also gives parents peace of mind while their child is eating. With a properly fitted safety harness, your baby can move around without the risk of falling.
There are two types of harnesses:
- The 5-point safety harness goes over the child’s shoulders, with another strap passing between their legs, and the harness clips at the waist. This is the safest type of safety harness, especially for children who move around a lot or who aren’t yet very stable when sitting.
- The 3-point safety harness goes between the child's legs and clips around the waist. Note that it does not go over the child's shoulders.
💡 Tip: Some cushions are compatible with the existing straps on high chairs, including vintage models.
The tray or meal tray
This accessory is a must-have for your baby’s first independent meals. It lets your baby eat at their own pace, minimizes spills, and makes cleanup after meals a breeze. A removable tray is a real plus for everyday use.
The bib
Not all bibs are created equal when a child starts eating while seated in a high chair. In fact, it’s best to choose wide bibs or ones with sleeves, made from easy-to-clean materials, or full-coverage styles to protect both the child’s clothes and the high chair cushion.

There are many models made in France, particularly in Occitanie. I invite you to read the article “ Why Choose Baby Accessories Made in Occitanie? The “Made in Occitanie” Label at Timouny ” to learn more about local and responsible commitment.
the mat or floor protector under the high chair
An essential item that’s becoming increasingly popular for every meal, as it protects the floor and makes cleanup a breeze. It takes the stress out of “messy” meals.
The little accessories that make all the difference
First, let’s talk about washable wipes to keep on hand. These washable wipes, made of cotton and bamboo terry cloth, make it easy to wipe your child’s hands and mouth. Larger rectangular sizes are available and are very practical.
You can also use a cloth, sponge, or paper towel to clean the chair. Finally, for added convenience, you can keep all these items in a small storage basket near the high chair.
👉 The idea: having everything you need on hand for a smooth meal.
When properly equipped, a high chair becomes a real space for babies to explore.
With the right accessories—especially a comfortable, well-fitting high chair cushion—mealtimes become more enjoyable, safer, and more relaxed for the whole family.
